Keyword Cannibalization
Keyword cannibalization happens when multiple pages compete for the same search intent and make the preferred ranking page unclear.
Keyword cannibalization is an intent clarity problem. It happens when multiple pages target the same query task and search systems cannot easily identify the best page.
Topic overlap is normal. Cannibalization is only a problem when the pages are trying to satisfy the same searcher need.
How to spot it
- Several pages rank for the same query and swap positions.
- Similar titles, headings, and sections appear across pages.
- Internal links point to different pages using similar anchor text.
- A weak article competes with a stronger service, category, or guide page.
- Search Console shows query impressions split across many near-identical URLs.
Fix options
- Merge pages into one stronger resource.
- Redirect old or weak pages to a better destination.
- Differentiate page intent, title, structure, and internal links.
- Reassign one page as support for the primary page.
- Use canonicals only when duplicate URL versions are the issue.
Common mistakes
Do not assume every shared keyword is cannibalization. A glossary page, guide, service page, and tool can all mention the same topic while serving different stages.
The fix should clarify page roles, not blindly delete content.
