Content Pruning
Content pruning is the process of deciding which pages should be updated, merged, redirected, noindexed, removed, or left alone.
Content pruning is not deleting old pages for neatness. It is a page-level decision process that improves site clarity, quality, internal links, and intent alignment.
Good pruning protects useful pages and removes or consolidates pages that no longer serve users or search systems.
Pruning decisions
- Refresh pages that still serve a valuable intent.
- Merge pages that compete for the same task.
- Redirect obsolete pages with clear replacements.
- Noindex pages useful to users but not search.
- Remove pages with no useful role or replacement.
- Leave pages alone when they still do their job.
Practical checks
- Does the page have impressions, clicks, links, conversions, or support value?
- Does it duplicate another page?
- Does it serve a clear search intent?
- Does it have a relevant replacement?
- Will changing it break internal links or authority signals?
Common mistakes
Do not prune only by traffic. Some low-traffic pages support trust, conversion, sales, support, local proof, or entity clarity.
Pruning works best after topic mapping clarifies what every page is supposed to do.
