Crawlability

Crawlability describes whether search engines can discover and request a page through links, sitemaps, and allowed URLs.

Crawlability is the access layer of SEO. A page that cannot be discovered or requested by search engines will struggle to earn organic visibility.

Common crawlability blockers include broken links, blocked robots rules, redirect loops, orphan pages, and server errors.

How crawlability fits SEO

Crawlability comes before indexability, ranking, and conversion. If search engines cannot reliably discover a URL, request it, and follow its links, the page may never get the chance to compete.

Strong crawlability does not mean every URL deserves to be crawled. A good technical SEO system helps crawlers reach important pages while reducing noise from duplicates, thin archives, parameters, and low-value internal search pages.

Practical checks

  • Important pages are linked from navigation, hubs, related content, or XML sitemaps.
  • Robots.txt does not block pages or resources needed for rendering.
  • Redirect chains are short and do not loop.
  • Server errors are rare and monitored.
  • JavaScript navigation does not hide important links from crawlers.
  • XML sitemaps include canonical, indexable URLs.

What to fix first

Start with blockers that affect revenue-facing pages, important guides, local landing pages, and key category or service pages.

After the high-value pages are reachable, reduce crawl waste by pruning duplicate paths, stale URLs, and pages that do not serve users or search systems.
